Observe his strange anatomy. The Plowman is
part human and part crustacean. He combines the four
elements of creation: fire, water, earth, and air.
The upheld touch denotes fire; the divining rod,
water. The warrior belt and dagger signify and point
toward the earth. The empty spaces in his limbs and
ribs, along with his whimsical pose, have airy
qualities. He proudly displays war medals and
epaulets. The tiny legs jutting from an immense
pelvis are those of a court jester and peg-legged
pirate res-pectively. The displaced sexual parts are
a further anomaly. The Plowman is in every
sense a contradiction, both ready for battle and as
nakedly inept as Humpty Dumpty. |
